Bab-Al-Bahrain

Bab-Al-Bahrain is the grand well known landmark of Manama which means “Gateway to Bahrain”.  The building type gateway  was designed by Sir Charles Belgrave in 1945 for government offices at the time, overlooking the sea which was very near, then.

Through Bab-Al-Bahrain you can enter to the main Bazzar, the souq of Manama, right in front of a beautiful round shaped fountain. Nowadays, Tourist Information Centre (TIC) is located there together with a gift shop selling Bahraini Handicrafts and Souvenirs to the tourists who visit Bab-Al-Bahrain. It is no doubt a centre point of Manama, the capital of Kingdom of Bahrain. Sightseeing bus tours depart from Bab-Al-Bahrain daily at 0930 and 1530.

 


Beit Al Quran

Beit Al Quran means Quran’s House. It is one of the island’s most attractive pieces of architecture and is the home to an immensely fair and valuable collection of Islamic manuscript collected from all around the Islamic world, including North Africa,  Iran, India & China along with a number of rare Islamic artifacts like jewellery, gold ornamental glass and utensils. The interesting collection of calligraphy prints and books of dates back to the 7th and 8th centuries are unique.


Al Fateh Grand Mosque

Al fateh Grand Mosque has its unique architectural beauty. That is why it is called the Grand Mosque. It has the world’s largest fiber glass dome and the entire Mosque is tastefully designed. The interior truly reflects the Islamic beauty. The mosque can accommodate more than 7,000 Muslims to offer prayers at a time.

Visitors and Tourists are requested (indeed it is mandatory) to wear decent clothes, cover the head and take off their shoes before entering the Mosque.


Bahrain National Museum

Bahrain National Museum was built in 1988 the US$.34 million complex offers a comprehensive view of Bahrain and it houses a wonderful collection of exhibits from contemporary Bahraini paintings, sculptures and ceramics to scenes depicting life in the  Dilmun civilization more than 5000 years ago.

The most attractive part of the museum is its halls where a replica of an ancient burial mound dating to 2800 BC is placed. The mound is taken from original place and reinstalled in the museum. Indeed, Bahrain National Museum will take you back in the history. The Museum also offers a vast space for cultural activities as well.


Arad Fort in Muharraq

In the Tylos of Greek period influence (from about 300 BC to the early first millennium) Muharraq was known as Arados from which Arad fort got its name. It was built in the 15th Century at Muharraq Island by Portuguese and later Omanis took the charge of it and the entire Muharraq. The classic fort is illuminated at night.

The fort is gracefully overlooking the sea with story-telling memories through its walls. The restoration program gave it new life, using traditional materials such as coral stone, lime, gypsum and date palm trunks, from which the fort was originally constructed. It is situated on the waterfront and is a popular spot for an evening stroll.


Beit  Shaikh Isa Bin  Ali Al Khalifa

This Beit (which means house) was the residence of His Highness Shaikh Isa Bin Ali Al Khalifa, The King’s great-great grandfather, from 1869 to 1932. His house in Muharraq gives a glimpse of royal life in the 19th century. The house was built  about 1800AD and it is considered as one of the oldest houses in Muharraq. Shaikh Isa Bin Ali Al Khalifa ruled Bahrain for 63 years.

The Beit is comprising of four main courtyards with small passages. The house has been restored and is an excellent example of a true Bahraini architecture of that time. The Beit has a large wind tower where cool air passes through the cross ventilation. The Beit reflects the classical taste of the residents then.


 

Beit Al Jasra

Built in 1907 using local materials, this was the birthplace of the former Amir, Shaikh Isa Bin Sulman Al Khalifa, in 1933, and is now a heritage museum.

One of the most enchanting rooms is one where dates used to be piled in palm baskets, and left to ripen. The weight would make the dates at the bottom gradually surrender their juices which would then be piped into jars and used for cooking.


King Fahad Causeway

King Fahad Causeway is approximately 25 km long, built at a cost of US$.1 billion connecting Kingdom of Bahrain with the Kingdom of Saudi    Arabia. It is one of the worlds’ longest bridges between two countries.

Due to this causeway, the tourist influx drastically increased and many Saudi Nationals are now regularly coming to Bahrain for shopping, weekend breaks and sight-seeing tours. On the other hand this causeway provides excellent opportunity to Bahraini Nationals as well to visit Saudi Arabia on wheels. It has definitely increased the economic activities for both the countries. The drive through this highways is a pleasure and a visit to its Restaurant Tower near the Saudi border is fun for the family.  The restaurant overlooks the beautiful and calm blue sea waters.


The Gudaibiya Palace

The Guest Palace in Gudaibiya, built in the 1950’s, was on the sea side before land reclamation pushed it further inland. The Palace is now largely reserved as the residence of Heads of State and other top dignitaries. Visitor’s aren’t allowed in, but you can catch a glimpse of the palace and its beautifully manicured lawns through the iron gates.

The Palace looks more beautiful, especially when it is lit after dark.


Qal’at Al Bahrain

This is an archeological site composed of an artificial mound created by human inhabitants from 2300BC up until 1700’s.

It once served as the capital of the Dilmun civilization and more recently as a Portugues fort. On top of the 12m high mound, there is an impressive Qal’at Al – Burtughal, which is the Portuguese fort.


Al Areen Wild Life Park

This wild life Park is Located in the mid west of Bahrain, 800 meters away from Bahrain International Circuit, an 8 kilometers square sanctuary of about 500 species of birds and animals. Visitors will enjoy relaxing in the air conditioned Park’s Buses on guided tour of the Park and will see over 50 animal species, 90 bird species and over 80 desert plant species. The park has become an essential part of touristic activity in Bahrain.

For those who love animals and birds it is a place not to be missed.


The Lost Paradise of Dilmun Water Park

The Lost Paradise of Dilmun Water Park was developed by the Al Areen Holding Company at an investment of US $50 million.

The Water Park covers and overall area of 77,000 sqm.

The theme of this exciting Water Park is based on Bahrain’s rich history links to the civilization of Dilmun. It provides a modern hi-tech, family recreation facility. Bahrain’s first world-class Water Park features some of the latest water based amusement technology, providing fun for all ages with special facilities and play areas designed to keep children amused for hours on end.


Tree of Life

The Tree of Life, a mature mesquite tree in a sea of sand, confounds by flourishing despite no apparent access to water.

The tree is over 100 years old (mesquite) that is considered a   natural wonder. This unique tree stands alone in the desert about 2 kilometers (1.2 mi) from Jabal –Al Dukhan, the highest point in Bahrain.
